Documentation
Lirep helps you build an opening repertoire, compare it with real games, and see how well your preparation holds up.
Getting started
- Sign in with your Lichess account.
- Create a study and choose whether you are preparing for White or Black.
- Add moves on the board, or select popular replies from Opening Explorer.
- Name the study; its edits auto-save. Then calculate its statistics on the Stats page.
Studies
A study is a named repertoire tree with a main line and variations. Play moves on the board or click the move list to navigate. Opponent moves can branch; your own prepared position has one reply, keeping the repertoire unambiguous.
- Set an optional starting point to calculate stats from a later position.
- Browse Lichess player or Masters games, filter player ratings and time controls, and add Explorer moves with one click.
- Enable Stockfish for local analysis and ranked candidate moves.
- Explorer settings are saved per study. The studied side is fixed when the study is created.
Stats
Calculations follow the study tree and weight opponent replies by their frequency in the selected Lichess Explorer pool. The studied player is assumed to know and play prepared moves.
- Expected score: expected fraction of a point from real-game win/draw/loss results.
- Coverage: how often games remain inside the prepared tree, move by move.
- Expected evaluation: Stockfish's expected position value when preparation ends.
Expected evaluation runs in your browser, caching Stockfish positions on this device. Update evaluations is optional: Update expected evaluation calculates any missing positions itself. Win probability can be recalculated separately.
Detailed Stats behaviorPractice
Choose a study, then drill its own-side moves. The app grades each attempt on the board and keeps a per-position knowledge score that fades over time, so it reflects what you can actually recall right now rather than what you once learned.
- Sessions mix due reviews with never-drilled positions, walking the tree from the study's starting point.
- Opponent replies are played for you; only your own prepared moves are graded.
Account and data
Lichess sign-in is required for studies and Explorer data. Lirep uses Lichess account and board preferences, can query its local March 2016 game archive or Lichess's hosted Explorer, and runs Stockfish locally in your browser. Studies are stored in SQLite and associated with their owner's Lichess account. Explorer responses are cached for up to 24 hours.
Stats are estimates, not guarantees. Explorer move lists omit rare replies, automatic rating bands use current ratings unless pinned, and local engine analysis uses a fixed search depth.
